WASHINGTON (LBM) – Donald Trump will return to the White House after he won a second term as president of the United States.
According to multiple news outlets, Trump secured the 270th electoral vote needed to secure victory in the early morning hours of Nov. 6. At 1 p.m. Wednesday, Trump was leading challenger and current Vice President Kamala Harris 292-224, according to the Associated Press.
The win comes after Trump survived two assassination attempts earlier this year. One occurred July 13, after a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. And on Sept. 15, a gunman’s plot to assassinate Trump at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, was stopped.
“We’re going to make our country better than it ever has been,” Trump said in his victory speech. “Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason, and that reason was to save our country and to restore America to greatness. And now we are going to fulfill that mission together.
“We’re going to fulfill that mission. The task before us will not be easy, but I will bring every ounce of energy, spirit and fight that I have in my soul to the job that you’ve entrusted to me.”
Trump will be the first president to win two non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland in 1892. The Louisiana Secretary of State office reported that Trump won 60 percent of the vote in Louisiana, or 1,208,233, to 38 percent for current Vice President Kamali Harris, who got 766,405 votes.
Additionally, Republicans secured the majority of seats in the Senate (52-43 at 1 p.m. Wednesday) and were leading in control for the House (197-177). Louisiana Republicans House Speaker Mike Johnson, Steve Scalise, Clay Higgins and Julia Letlow were re-elected to another term in the House. Democrats Troy Carter and Cleo Fields won the state’s remaining two seats in the House.
“The number of victories in the Senate was absolutely incredible,” Trump said in his victory speech. “It was amazing to look at all those victories. Nobody expected that. You have some great senators and some greater new senators.
“And it also looks like we’ll be keeping control of the House of Representatives,” he continued. “And I want to thank Mike Johnson. I think he’s doing a terrific job.”
CONGRATULATIONS OFFERED
Louisiana’s delegation to Congress took to social media to congratulate Trump on the projected win and reflected on their own re-election.
“We have saved America,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, a member with Cypress Baptist Church, Benton, wrote on Twitter. “The American people have spoken, and President Trump and Senator JD Vance are going to the White House. We are ready to get to work for the American people.”
Steve Scalise wrote on Facebook that Trump was “overwhelmingly.”
“With such a strong electoral victory, the American people gave a mandate to President Trump to fix the problems facing our country,” he said. “I look forward to working with President Trump to lower food and energy prices for families, secure America’s border, and restore peace through strength. We have much work to do, and we will quickly get to work for those hard-working families who voted for this change so we can Make America Great Again.”
Letlow thanked her supporters.
“Thank You #LA05!” she wrote on Twitter. “It truly is the honor of my lifetime to be your representative in Congress and I look forward to continuing the critical fight for our families and our future over the next two years!”
Sen. Bill Cassidy offered his congratulations via X (formerly known as Twitter).
“Congratulations to President Trump, VP-elect Vance, and their families on the victory,” he said. “I am excited that Republicans have decisively taken control of the Senate. This creates a great opportunity to advance a conservative agenda!”
