By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer PINEVILLE – Central Louisiana saw 432 lives lost to abortion in 2015, but Brian Gunter is confident that trend can be reversed, if thousands of believers stand strong in unison. “We need to join together in central Louisiana,” said Gunter, pastor of First Baptist Church in Pollock. “We may have different religious beliefs but we are in full agreement that we must stand up for the unborn,” he told a diverse religious group gathered in Louisiana College’s Granberry Conference Center, Oct. 26, during the CENLA Pro-life Prayer Breakfast. “The 432 lives that were taken in central Louisiana through abortion need to be saved,” he continued. “And we are going to do it.” Gunter is spearheading efforts to bring the first pregnancy care center to central Louisiana. Multiple speakers added to Gunter’s message about how to reduce abortions in this area of the state. Last year, 9,311 abortions were performed in Louisiana, down from 10,211 abortions reported in 2014. The 2015 figure is the lowest number of abortions in the state since 2012, when 9,225 abortions were reported. Hosted by Louisiana Right to Life, the breakfast program increased awareness and raised funds for the … [Read more...]
Rollover your IRA for year-end giving
ALEXANDRIA – As 2016 comes to a close, remember IRA accounts can be used to support local churches and ministries. At the end of 2015, Congress made the IRA Charitable Rollover a permanent part of the tax code so individuals who are 70 ½ years of age and above can make distributions from either traditional or Roth IRA’s directly to the donor’s selected charitable organization(s) without being included as taxable income to the donor. The rollover provision particularly benefits those who do not itemize on their federal income tax return and those who do not need the income from the minimum required distribution (MRD). The basic facts regarding the IRA Charitable Rollover: -- Donor must be at least 70 1/2 years of age. -- Donations of up to $100,000 from an IRA made directly to charitable organizations are not included in taxable income. -- Donations count toward donor’s Minimum Required Distribution. For more information refer to www.LBFinfo.org or contact your CPA or tax advisor. … [Read more...]
LA Baptist Foundation continues Give-a-Gift
ALEXANDRIA – The Louisiana Baptist Foundation is continuing to use Give-A-Gift to illustrate how the Foundation assists individuals with gifts that benefit Baptist churches and ministries. Each month in 2016 the Louisiana Baptist Foundation is giving away $1,000 and you decide where it goes. In each issue of the Baptist Message and online at www.baptistmessage.com/give-a-gift a submission form is available to participate. Once a month, a name will be randomly drawn from those who submit a form. The person, randomly selected, will have the opportunity to direct a $1,000 gift to the Louisiana Baptist church, ministry or organization they choose. Insight: The role of the Louisiana Baptist Foundation
By Jerry Love, Director of Planned Giving ALEXANDRIA – Recently I was visiting with a friend whom I’ve known for a number of years. He is retired from a full time church staff position but still actively involved in ministry. He asked me a question that caught me by surprise, given his involvement in Baptist life. “What does the Louisiana Baptist Foundation do?” As I attempted to give him a quick explanation, I wondered how many others understood the work of the Foundation. As an agency of the Louisiana Baptist Convention, the Foundation encourages and assists with gifts that benefit Louisiana Baptist churches, and Baptist institutions that are affiliated with the LBC or the Southern Baptist Convention. The church or organization is selected by the donor. Sounds pretty straightforward but giving can be complicated. The LBF typically does not receive gifts for its own benefit. The beneficiary of gifts directed to the Foundation, whether a “pass-through” gift or an endowment managed by the Foundation, is a church or Baptist purpose selected by the donor. There are many ways to give, some as simple as writing a check while other gifts can be fairly complicated. The Louisiana Baptist Foundation can help a donor … [Read more...]

Pitkin community witnesses Holy Spirit-filled tent revival
By Message Staff PITKIN – The Holy Spirit is moving in the small rural community of Pitkin. More than 250 people gathered for the beginning of a tent revival Sunday, Oct. 16 and throughout most of the week, the crowds did not diminish but grew. The focus of the revival according to a Louisiana Baptist pastor was apathy – a problem facing many Christians today. Branden Martin hoped by the end of the revival those who made a decision to face this problem will commit to a change that he believes could transform Pitkin and surrounding areas. “To me, apathy is one of the major plagues in our churches today,” said Martin, organizer of the revival and pastor of Westport Friendship Baptist Church in Pitkin. “We get in this attitude about church and it becomes routine. We are cold and stagnant as churches as a whole. “Church has to be a place that’s alive when the world walks in,” he continued. “With apathy and any other characteristic in our life that isn’t Godly, it starts with us individually. It has to start with one person. The cure for apathy, the remedy for spiritual awakening, is not in the big steps. It’s not about doing something big. It’s about the small steps of everyday living.” The revival began Sunday, Oct. … [Read more...]
NOBTS to launch Adrian Rogers Center for preaching
By Gary D Myers, NOBTS Communications NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary trustees have approved the establishment of an Adrian Rogers Center for Expository Preaching. Additional initiatives also were approved during the trustees' fall meeting to enhance the training of local church pastors and other church leaders -- a Christian leadership major in the doctor of philosophy program and several enhancements to the seminary's master of divinity program. "Dr. Adrian Rogers is one of the most significant alumni in the history of NOBTS -- well-known for a lifetime of excellent expository preaching," President Chuck Kelley said following the trustee meeting. "This center will enhance our ability to train students and prepare them to open God's Word and teach through great expository preaching over the years of their ministry." Rogers, who died in 2005 after 33 years as pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn., earned the bachelor of divinity (equivalent to today's master of divinity) at NOBTS in 1958. The Memphis-area pastor and three-time SBC president, launched his radio and television ministry "Love Worth Finding" in 1987. Through Love Worth Finding, millions of people were impacted through … [Read more...]
Former congressman, PSC chairman Clyde Holloway passes away at 72
FOREST HILL - Clyde Holloway, a former congressman, chairman of Louisiana's utility regulatory agency and a Southern Baptist, died Sunday at his home in Forest Hill. He was 72. A Lecompte native, Holloway, a staunch fiscal and social conservative, owned and operated Holloway's Nursery, a business he started with his wife in the early 1970s. He entered Louisiana politics in 1980, when he unsuccessfully ran to unseat U.S. Rep. Gillis Long in the state's 8th Congressional District. He ran unsuccessfully again in a 1985 special election after Long died before winning the seat in an upset in 1986. "I became a Republican because of Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan inspired me to run for Congress," he often said. He was re-elected twice before the 8th District was eliminated following the 1990 Census. Forest Hill was redrawn into the 6th District, where Holloway faced fellow U.S. Rep. Richard Baker. Holloway lost by about 2,700 votes when Baker took clear majorities in the two largest parishes, Livingston and East Baton Rouge, both of them around his home base of Baton Rouge. He would run unsuccessfully for Congress five more times, the last time in 2014. Holloway served as the Louisiana State Director of Rural … [Read more...]
Children show love, give aid to flood victims
By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer BATON ROUGE – When 8-year-old Taylor Henry saw the devastation caused by August flooding in southern Louisiana, she realized something must be done. What she did not foresee is how her desire would turn into an effort that raised more than $7,000 for those affected by the disaster. Henry, her parents and grandparents made the journey to Woodlawn Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, where she presented a check during the Oct. 9 worship service. The youngster was all smiles as she handed over the donation, which will be used to purchase sheetrock to help rebuild houses and churches in the area. “This was a really good experience for me and one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done,” said Henry, whose family are members of Airline Baptist Church in Bossier City. “I probably won’t experience anything like this again. The flooding was really bad in south Louisiana. “I felt horrible for how bad the flooding was but felt glad I got to help the flood victims physically in their homes and by raising money for them,” she continued. “The donation I brought may not be the biggest donation but it was able to save a couple of houses by buying materials. I really think God gave me this … [Read more...]
Louisiana Baptists celebrate 150th church plant since 2010
By Brian Blackwell, Message Staff Writer ALEXANDRIA – Church planters, state missions staff and numerous guests gathered in the Louisiana Baptist Building Oct. 5 to commemorate the 150th church planted since 2010. This milestone achievement marks the half-way point for the goal of planting 300 churches by 2020 as part of one of the 10 action steps identified in the President’s 2020 Commission Final Report, which was affirmed by messengers during the 2013 LBC Annual Meeting. Planting healthy, biblically sound, multiplying churches is a key component to the seven-year-strategy which seeks to engage two audiences – the next generation and every people group – in reaching Louisiana with the Gospel. James Jenkins, director of church planting for Louisiana Baptists, said the occasion was a celebration of a partnership between church planters, sponsoring churches and directors of missions. “We have been ramping up our rate of church planting over the months and we knew if we were here at this point that we would be able to get to 300 by 2020,” said Jenkins. “I’m excited because every increase in this number actually corresponds with reaching people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. “We are baptizing people,” he … [Read more...]
