The issue was raised during the Republican South Carolina debate in reference to a 1998 full-page USA Today ad affirming an addition to the denomination’s Baptist Faith & Message that says, in part, “A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the leadership of Christ.” Huckabee and his wife Janet were two of approximately 130 evangelicals whose names appeared supporting the statement. (BP) – The two brothers who directed Facing the Giants now are working on another cinematic release –  Fireproof,  starring Kirk Cameron – about saving a failing marriage. Stephen Kendrick, co-writer and director for the newest movie from Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga., along with his brother Alex, wrapped up five weeks of filming their latest Christian drama in December. Earlier releases Flywheel, The Movie in 2003 and Facing the Giants in 2006 received strong reviews and calls for another installment in the feel-good, faith-based, family values vein. Facing the Giants drew $10 million in box office receipts and remains a best-selling DVD. Fireproof is scheduled to hit theaters in August; like Facing the Giants, it will be distributed through Provident Films, a subsidiary of Sony Pictures. (BP) – It’s been heartbreaking to see how many Christian young people drop out of church after graduating from high school, says Scott Brawner, who founded a program called Fusion to counter the dropoff. Established at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2005, Fusion is becoming an initiative of the International Mission Board to inspire students to continue following Christ after high school and to pursue missions as a career and calling. Fusion offers high school graduates, ages 18-24, opportunities to gain missions experience for college credit. In 2008-09, the nine-month program will still be housed at Midwestern Seminary in Kansas City, Mo., and operated through its undergraduate school, Midwestern Bible College, SBC. FRANKLIN, Tenn. (BP) – A lot of people will say, ‘This guy knows the whole Bible.’ “Well, I really don’t,” Rollin DeLap admits. “The reason they say that is because most people have memorized so little” of “the Word of God.” DeLap seems to use a capital W when he speaks of “the Word,” attaching a deeper sort of respect to the Bible than mere paper, ink and ancient stories and wisdom. When he started memorizing various passages from the Word more than 50 years ago, he was a college student who “never dreamed what impact it would have on my life.” But it led to a career of speaking at campuses across the country, exhorting collegians to put the Word of God in their hearts and to tell others about how faith in Christ, rooted in the Word and enlivened by the Holy Spirit, could change their lives. When Gibbie McMillan called – he’s Men’s Ministry and Volunteer Strategist for the Louisiana Baptist Convention – Peters freely gave of his time and talents to assist in disaster relief efforts. “He just never seems to be able to do enough,” McMillan said. “I always knew I could count on him to be there no matter how big or small the job was.” Because of his dedication and effort, Peters was named the Volunteer of the Year at the 2008 Disaster Relief Roundtable and Appreciation Banquet Friday evening. His was one of three major awards presented at the banquet. Sixty-four-year-old James Carson, Director of Missions for the Tri-Association and Disaster Relief Chaplaincy Coordinator, was presented the second annual Freddie Arnold Lifetime Achievement Award. A 42-year veteran of the ministry, Carson, last year’s recipient of the Cal Jones Leadership, has served coordinator of Disaster Relief Chaplaincy for the past four years. BLANCHARD – The last several years have seen some remarkable developments at this missions-minded church at the northern tip of the state, said Dale Sauls, administrator and minister of education at First Blanchard. “In 2003 we moved into our new sanctuary and we were able to go back to one service after having two for the last 12 years,” he said. “But in August we went back to two services – the traditional at 8:30 and a blended service at 10:30 – to give people a choice in styles.” In addition to reaching the people of their own community with a variety of worship styles, the 1,500 or so members also have a commitment to reaching the world for Jesus Christ, Sauls explained. “We’re getting ready for our annual world missions conference March first and second,” he said. Sauls said the conference will open with a come-and-go reception to allow the church’s membership and guests to meet one-on-one with the visiting missionaries. Creative pastors are finding ways to discover a niche to reach their communities for Christ. One pastor, Stan Wyant, discovered a niche in his community. In his state of Louisiana, everyone born after Sept. 1, 1969 is required to take a hunter’s safety course before hunting. In a state known as the “Sportsman’s Paradise,” Stan found a need his church could meet, and the congregation began plans to host a two-day course. In the end, 90 people not affiliated with the church, Lismore Baptist, came to the course. That’s nearly as many people as attend Sunday School any given week. In fact, the course was in such demand some of the attendees drove over an hour to be there. At the conclusion of the course, the church sponsored a skeet shoot and an archery contest. As the participants ate lunch, a guest speaker presented the Gospel. Church members gave Bibles and gospel tracts to all who attended. Dwayne Rodgers is another pastor who discovered a niche. CHALMETTE –John Jeffries, pastor of First Baptist Chalmette, recently received a note from an 8-year-old who attends a Southern Baptist congregation in Jackson, Mo. The card and contents came after a series of blessings. First Chalmette has developed several partnerships with churches across the U.S, the pastor emailed. “God has also raised several individuals that we call ‘Advocates.’ These people – in some strange way that only God can explain – have developed a heavy burden for our church.  “For instance, there’s a man in Alabama who is constantly creating financial blessings for our project. He convinced his church to send a one-time financial gift of $100,000 to rebuild member homes.” This man also was behind a $50,000 matching grant; First Chalmette is still receiving money to be coupled with this grant.
