Louisiana College honoring legendary Coach Billy Allgood
PINEVILLE (LCNews) -- Louisiana College will honor former legendary coach Billy Allgood March 29 at 3:30 p.m. by dedicating a new sign on the campus at the entrance to Billy Allgood Field. Allgood came to LC as head basketball coach and assistant football coach in 1959. He was appointed athletic director in 1965 and was given head baseball coach responsibilities in 1969. Athletes from that 1959 team have led in procuring the sign and planning the dedication ceremony. Two of those athletes -- Bobby Tindall and Larry Ladner -- will be on-hand to speak at the dedication. In 26 years as basketball coach, Allgood’s teams won 327 games, which ranks him sixth all-time among college basketball coaches in the state. Twice, Allgood was chosen NAIA District 30 Coach of the Year, and he was picked as coach of the North team in the 1979 and 1980 Louisiana collegiate all-star games. In 1986, the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches tabbed him "Mr. Louisiana Basketball," and the group inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 1990. Allgood has also been elected to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Allgood's 1969-70 team, led by Billy Jones, became the first in school history to win 20 games. Included among those wins was … [Read more...]

By Norm Miller, LC News PINEVILLE -- Louisiana College has announced a new C.S. Lewis Scholarship and established a cohort as part of a newly launched Honors Program. Enrolling freshmen who scored a 28 or higher on the ACT are eligible for the annual scholarship of $8,500. “These academic innovations are Louisiana College’s rewards to high school students who excelled academically, and who aspire to continue the level of Christian impact upon his culture C.S. Lewis had,” said LC President Rick Brewer. “Lewis -- whose intellectual acumen and Christian influence -- exemplifies one who integrated his faith and learning, thus reflecting our goal of preparing graduates and transforming lives.” Additional advantages of being a C.S. Lewis Scholar include: - attending classes focused on C.S. Lewis and his writings; - representing LC as an ambassador at Christian worldview conferences; - mentoring other students academically; - interning at local industries and businesses that relate to your major; - upon approval, pursuing additional courses beyond the 18-hour maximum; and - at student’s expense, studying at Oxford University, where C.S. Louisiana DR makes urgent plea for hay for Midwest and Texas ravaged by wildfires
By Message Staff Louisiana Baptists State Disaster Relief Director Gibbie McMillan has issued an urgent call for donations for ranchers who have lost thousands of acres of land and cattle from recent wildfires in several Midwestern states. The most pressing donations needed are bales or rolls of hay, trucks to transport the hay and money to purchase fuel to transport the hay or purchase additional hay bales. “It’s hard to get your hands on something this large, especially for us who are not familiar with that terrain and the kind of problems like this,” McMillan said. “But when people are hurting, what they need is a friendly hand and a shoulder to lean on. For the church to be the church, we need to care about people who are hurting. We’re not asking people to give all their hay away but I do know if a person has 100 bales, they should be able to share 10 round bales of hay without it crippling their yield for the year. And those people have nothing. That’s heart wrenching.” Around 811,000 acres of land in Kansas and Oklahoma and another 750,000 in the Texas panhandle have burned since the fires began. Six people have also perished due to the fires and the death toll for animals, which is being estimated into the … [Read more...]
Horn: God, Keeper of Promises
The story of Noah ends in Genesis 9 with a promise. This is the end of Noah’s story, but not our story. God keeps his promises. You say well that’s just one story. No, it’s the ongoing story. To Abraham, “I’ll make you the father of many nations. To Moses, “I AM will be with you.” To Mary and Joseph, To Zacharias and Elizabeth… Then perhaps best of all Jesus prophesying His own death. But better than that, His prophesy of resurrection in three days. See, it’s a pattern. And He has promised His return. What has he promised to you personally? His Presence His Power To answer our prayer Salvation Heaven Return The list is infinite. And He will keep them all. This year on Wednesday nights, I am leading a Bible Study on the book of Genesis. You can join us at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church, Lafayette. We have a dinner ($6) beginning at 4:45 p.m. This week (March 8) we will take a look at Genesis 10-11. Come walk with us this year through this book of beginnings. (This post is based on the message from Genesis Chapter 9, which you can listen to at fbclaf.org/genesis) … [Read more...]
