Gods will stands as one of the most vital concepts in Christian living, yet, no other term seems more commonly misused and abused. Every person who claims the name of Christ should desire above all else to do what God wills or what God wants. This goes for every part of a Christians life. Gods will stands as one of the most vital concepts in Christian living, yet, no other term seems more commonly misused and abused. Every person who claims the name of Christ should desire above all else to do what God wills or what God wants. This goes for every part of a Christians life. To hear much Christian conversation, one would think that Gods will only bears on momentous decisions or incidents. Certainly, Gods will should bear strongly on these, but it has far broader bearing. It is an all encompassing concept that means seeking to do what God wants us to do in all circumstances and all situations. Most conversations about Gods will make it seem as though God always hides his desire and finding it proves to be one of the greatest tasks faced by believers. Yet, for 99.44 percent of life, we have a certain word from God about knowing his will. Gods will is to follow … [Read more...]

Louisiana ‘Choose Life’ license plate draws ACLU fire
Apparently, this is one specialty license plate that will not go unnoticed. A specialty Louisiana license plate bearing the words "Choose Life" and depicting a pelican carrying a baby wrapped in a blanket may soon be the target of a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. The "Choose Life" license plate featuring Louisianas state bird was approved unanimously by both the Louisiana House and Senate in 1999 and signed into law by Republican Governor Mike Foster. People who buy the specialty license plates pay the $3.50 cost of the plate (a cost paid for all license plates) plus an additional $25 charge for the specialty design, money that is collected by the state treasury. From those funds, an advisory council established under the Louisiana law then recommends the awarding of grants to private adoption advocacy groups. The money must be targeted to help women who have a crisis pregnancy. The help can be financial, … [Read more...]

A recent article in the Baptist Message was entitled "failure to forgive results in living hell." I certainly agree with that up to a certain point. I would say that a Christian should always be willing to forgive if the proper conditions are met. A recent article in the Baptist Message was entitled "failure to forgive results in living hell." I certainly agree with that up to a certain point. I would say that a Christian should always be willing to forgive if the proper conditions are met. The proper conditions would be for the offender to be sorry for his action and apologize for it; that is, ask for forgiveness. The Scriptures indicate that God does not forgive unless there is repentance and faith on the part of the offender. God always stands ready to forgive if the proper conditions are met. God did not forgive me until I repented and trusted Christ as Savior. The Christian should have no hatred for the offender nor do anything to hurt him. However, to forgive him for his wrong without sorrow and apology on his part is to give him an excuse for what he did and perhaps lead him to commit other offenses. Wayne D. We have seen God do mighty and wonderful things through volunteers
Southern Baptists are poised to set another record for short-term volunteer projects overseas - with astounding impact both abroad and at home. Observers agree - the city of New Orleans is one of the nations most challenging environments, a true laboratory for missions work. It was in this laboratory that almost 200 people recently were led to Christ through the work of 800-plus youth. This summer, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary hosted eight weeks of MissionLab New Orleans, allowing youth to learn missions by doing and to encourage and equip them to be missionaries at home. "We want them to understand that God is already doing a work here that they can be a part of, but we also want them to see that God is working around them at home, and they need to go home and get plugged into that," MissionLab co-director Darrell Lindsey says. Young people from across the United States were invited to participate in 117 projects at 22 New Orleans sites, including the French Quarter, where youth handed out sandwiches, hygiene products and evangelistic literature to the homeless; the Desire Housing Development, … [Read more...]
For these Louisiana Baptists, the chance to make an important difference was found just around the block
Louisiana leaders recently granted Distinguished Partners in Education 2000 awards to five organizations for outstanding volunteer work with local schools. They included University Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. Louisiana leaders recently granted Distinguished Partners in Education 2000 awards to five organizations for outstanding volunteer work with local schools. They included University Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. For two years, University members have volunteered in various capacities at Highland Elementary School, a public school located less than two blocks from the church. "Its very humbling because we dont do these things for the recognition," University pastor Keith Putt says. Two years ago, a long-term school volunteer asked the church if it had maps it could donate to the school. The volunteer was not a member of University, but she saw the church as a potential provider for the school. Seeing the schools needs, the church soon decided to take it on as a community mission. Members formally adopted the school and titled their program "To Highland, With Love." The ministry began with donations for school uniforms and later … [Read more...]
Hollywood is wrong
In this case, Hollywood is wrong - viewing violence in television and other media can result in an acceptance of and acting out of violence by some children, public health experts warned in a recent statement. More than 1,000 studies from more than three decades point to a "causal connection between media violence and aggressive behavior in some children," officials with the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry warned in a statement released late last month.
