Like many other young families, Cliff and Aimee Doughty, and their 3-year-old son, Benjamin, enjoyed the fruit of their labors with frequent meals out and basket-bulging trips to Wal-Mart. TIOGA – Like many other young families, Cliff and Aimee Doughty, and their 3-year-old son, Benjamin, enjoyed the fruit of their labors with frequent meals out and basket-bulging trips to Wal-Mart. Now they’re doing less, and enjoying it more. “You could look back at the end of the month, and you couldn’t pinpoint anything you’ve got in excess, even though you may have had a little extra to spend,” said Cliff Doughty, a biomedical technician. “That aggravates you after awhile.” Members of Faith Tioga, the Doughtys recently graduated from Financial Peace University, a 13-week course they took at the church where Clark Palmer is pastor. “I feel we have a much tighter grasp on our money and where it goes,” Cliff Doughty said. “There’s not too much in the ways of lost moneys around this house any more. That makes you feel so much better.” The Doughtys learned to allocate their money to make the best use of it. For example, they could eat out as much as they wanted, or they could put money into … [Read more...]
First person: Demonic debt diverts attention
Many American households are drowning in debt and see no way out of the pit that continues to grow deeper by the month. The problem is so profound that 75 percent of Americans are a mere three paychecks away from bankruptcy. ALEXANDRIA – Many American households are drowning in debt and see no way out of the pit that continues to grow deeper by the month. The problem is so profound that 75 percent of Americans are a mere three paychecks away from bankruptcy. In 2003, American households racked up $412 billion in credit card charges, up 185 percent from the previous five years, according to Standard & Poor’s. The average balance on open credit cards in December 2005 was $4,616.90. If a household has more than one credit card, the average amount of consumer debt is in excess of $8,000. An ever-mounting consumer debt can wreck one’s judgment, job performance and relationships. There are people, even Christians, who are so far behind they sense the enemy has cast them into a demonic bondage and there is no hope except for bankruptcy, a lottery win, a consolidation loan or cashing out the equity of a home. All of those scenarios carry problems within themselves and tend to exacerbate the debt … [Read more...]

Pornography: secret sin that hurts
Douglas seemed to have it all – a wife, children and vibrant ministry. Editor’s note: The following article contains sensitive information. Real identities of Louisiana Baptist pastors and members have been changed for privacy reasons. Douglas seemed to have it all – a wife, children and vibrant ministry. But the Louisiana Baptist pastor had a dark side to his life – an addiction to pornography. It began to develop while Douglas attended high school and college, he said. “What was a common struggle with masturbation became compulsive and eventually led to the use of pornography,” Douglas said. “As technology made pornography more readily accessible, the more intense the bondage became.” Douglas said his addiction caused intolerable pain and shame. He suffered stress, significant financial loss, lack of respect from friends and family, and untold damage to his marriage, bringing the pastor to the brink of divorce. “Perhaps the most painful reality is the pain and shame I heaped upon my children – especially my girls,” Douglas recalled. “The immediate pleasure that it brought does not begin to compare with the pain, shame and misery accompanying it. Eventually it led me to the … [Read more...]
What’s a woman to do?
Resources to help men deal with pornography addictions are common, but how should a woman deal with the devastating pain of knowing her husband has been ensnared in one of Satan’s most lethal traps? By Erin Roach Baptist Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP) – Resources to help men deal with pornography addictions are common, but how should a woman deal with the devastating pain of knowing her husband has been ensnared in one of Satan’s most lethal traps? Dr. Rebekah Land, a Southern Baptist psychotherapist in private practice in Nashville, Tenn., told Baptist Press that Internet pornography is considered the “crack cocaine” of pornography these days because it’s so addicting and easily accessible. Pastors are not immune to its deceitful allure, tearing apart families every day. “It used to be that if a guy wanted to look at pornography he’d have to go to some seedy, XXX theater and watch awful B-grade or C-grade films,” Land said. But today, the most common pornography users wouldn’t dare go to a theater or creepy bookstore; the average man can be swept up and his marriage shattered without even leaving his office. In this kind of environment, it’s all the more necessary that wives become … [Read more...]
