Thank you for continuing to sound the alarm against Louisianas
gambling addiction. Do you ever wonder if anyone is listening?

Isnt it ironic that on the flip side of your current
editorial about the slippery slope of boats and casinos there is a news story
about an evangelizing sportsmens seminar that promotes attendance with
door prizes? How easily we have slipped down that slope.
Is gambling OK if its for a good cause like evangelism
or education? There are three elements to gambling: (1) an element of chance
such as numbers rolled on dice or numbers on a ticket drawn at random; (2) a
prize to be won. It may be a $10 jackpot or a $450 shotgun; (3) a consideration
of value. It may be a $2 bet on a horse race or a $15 “cover charge”
for the meal and seminar.
Does it bother anyone else that our Baptist churches have so
quickly and thoroughly absorbed the gambling culture?
