We have all grieved with a deep sadness over the tragedy at an elementary school in Connecticut. A single gunman murdered 26 other people, 20 of them children aged 7 and under.
The numbers are staggering, in what is now the second deadliest school shooting on American soil.
Across the nation, hearts are broken – and well they should be! But, there are some other numbers we, as God’s people, should consider.
How about 55,763,976? That is the number of abortions performed in the United States since 1973. Here is how that breaks down: one child every 24 seconds, 2.4 every minute, 144 every hour, 3,456 every day, 24,192 every week, 106,380 every month, and 1,261,440 every year. Do you feel distressed yet?
But, wait, there’s more! Let us put this into modern perspective. As of May 4, 2010, the Vietnam Wall contained 58,272 names and stretched 246’9.” A similar memorial containing the names of abortion victims would stretch more than 111 miles. There really is very little way for most of us to fathom such a thing.
We have become almost numb to unspeakable tragedies and their human cost. Since 1973, abortions have totaled more than nine times the number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust, more than 18,731 times the number of victims on 9/11, more than 23,205 times the casualties at Pearl Harbor, and more than 76 times the number of homicides in the same time frame.
Although the news is incredibly grim, there is an answer, brothers and sisters in Christ! Proverbs 31:8-9 says,Speak up for those who have no voice, for the justice of all who are dispossessed. Speak up, judge righteously, and defend the cause of the oppressed and needy.
Who among our society has less voice or is more defenseless than the millions of unborn babies we allow our culture to slaughter every year? God is clear in His Word regarding our responsibility to speak up on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. One fantastic opportunity you have to exercise your voice is the annual Louisiana Life March.
Every year, the LBC partners with a number of other pro-life organizations headed up by the Louisiana Family Forum to march on our state capitol and call for new legislation to eliminate the practice of abortion in the state of Louisiana.
Can you imagine what might happen if every church in the LBC was represented by even a few members at that march?
This year, the march will be held on Jan. 12. All the event details can be found at www.prolifelouisiana.org. Pastors, I encourage you to lead your churches by leading the way to the Life March!
Complacency in the face of this blight upon our society is not an option. Some complain that our likelihood of success is so slim as to render anything we would do proactively irrelevant. Is this an utterly futile endeavor? As Martin Luther said, “Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing.”
But Luther knew, as we do today, that we do not operate solely in the realm of the flesh. He answered this objection by declaring we were not alone, but that the right Man is on our side, the Man God Himself chose! If you’re curious as to who that might be, it is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself! He is the Lord of Hosts, who does not change, and He will win the battle!
The message of the gospel is a message of life! The cause of justice for the unborn dovetails quite nicely with our mandate to share the gospel. If just one pregnant lady hears our message, and chooses life over death, it is well worth every effort we can make!
Jesus loves the little children. Let us love them with Him!
